Halloween need not look the same in every house. Scotland has its turnip lanterns and guisers; Catalonia brings chestnuts and small sweets to the table around All Saints. There is room for both a little theatre and a good autumn supper.

Sources and event dates checked: 9 October 2026.

## A neep in the window

The National Trust for Scotland records lanterns carved from turnips—neeps or tumshies—before pumpkins became familiar. Their faces were associated with warding off spirits. That is a tradition and belief, rather than evidence of anything supernatural.

A turnip is harder to hollow than a pumpkin. Let an adult handle the carving and use a battery light for the glow. A single curious face in the window is quite enough to set the scene.

## Let the guisers earn their treat

Scottish guising means dressing up and visiting neighbours, traditionally with a song, joke or other performance for a reward. The Trust also describes apple dooking and nut-burning customs. Their explanations belong to the record of folklore.

For a home gathering, ask everyone to bring one small performance: a riddle, a tune, a joke that deserves its own groan. The evening gains a little character before the sweets arrive.

## Across Europe: a different autumn table

Catalonia’s heritage service describes Castanyada around All Saints, with roasted chestnuts, sweet potatoes and panellets. In Barcelona, the tradition includes visiting and tending graves on 1 November. This is a distinct seasonal observance, rather than another name for a Halloween party.

Borrow the idea of a warm table: chestnuts, an autumn soup and something sweet. Keep the story of the custom alongside the food.

## Derry’s fortieth celebration

Derry City and Strabane District Council confirms its 2026 Halloween programme runs from 28 October to 1 November, marking forty years since the festival began. Check the organiser’s programme for individual event times, tickets and travel arrangements.

## A pumpkin for supper, another for display

Choose a pumpkin or squash sold for eating for the kitchen. The RHS distinguishes eating and carving varieties and says ornamental gourds are not suitable for eating. A carved display is not automatically a food ingredient.

## Before the bonfire

The British Hedgehog Preservation Society recommends moving accumulated bonfire material to a new, clear site just before burning, checking the whole pile carefully and lighting from one side to leave an escape route.
